On June 19, Minister of Defence of Ukraine Andrii Taran held a meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ukraine Takashi Kurai.

Minister of Defence of Ukraine informed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ukraine about the military-political situation in Ukraine and around its borders, the situation in the Joint Forces operation area and the measures taken by the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces of Ukraine to prevent proliferation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Minister paid considerable attention to the state of implementation of the defence reform, as well as to the priority areas of bilateral cooperation.

Japanese ambassador assured of unequivocal support for Ukraine’s strategic course towards European and Euro-Atlantic integration and reaffirmed his country’s principled position on condemning Russian aggression in the East of Ukraine and non-recognition of the illegal annexation of Crimea.

— Japan has supported and will continue to support Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity from the very beginning of its independence in 1991, — noted Takashi Kurai.

Andrii Taran thanked the Government of Japan for principled and unwavering position on Ukraine’s political support, as well as for providing significant economic and humanitarian assistance to our country. Defence Minister stressed the importance of further development of military-political dialogue between our countries at a high level and deepening defence cooperation between Ukraine and Japan. Particular emphasis was placed on the need to intensify areas of cooperation under the Memorandum between the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and the Ministry of Defence of Japan on cooperation and exchanges in defence sphere, signed in 2018.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan assured that people and the Government of Japan will continue to provide support to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in particular, by providing logistical assistance: both high-tech medical equipment for military medical institutions of Ukraine and modern medicines to combat coronavirus, as well as timely and quality preparation for its possible second wave. Thus, through the UN Office in Ukraine by the end of 2020, it is planned to deliver another batch of medical equipment to hospitals in Kharkiv, Lviv and Irpin in the amount of $ 1.4 million and provide appropriate professional training for medical staff.

— With the delivery of the specified equipment, assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Japan in the medical field can reach $ 4 million. This is a significant contribution to ensuring Ukraine’s defence capabilities by saving the lives and health of Ukrainian service personnel. The Ministry of Defence highly appreciates such a step by the Government of Japan, — emphasized Andrii Taran.

The conversation took place in a warm and constructive atmosphere. The parties agreed to continue developing mutually beneficial cooperation.
