Minister of Defence of Ukraine held a telephone conversation with the Minister of National Defence of Canada

On April 7, the Minister of Defence of Ukraine Andrii Taran held a telephone conversation with the Minister of National Defence of Canada Harjit Sajjan.

The main topic of the dialogue was the discussion of the security situation around Ukraine and in the world under the current epidemiological situation in the armed forces of both countries. The Canadian Defence Minister reiterated the continued unconditional support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as willingness of the Canadian Defence Ministry to assist in enhancing the defence capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In particular, parties to the conversation discussed continued support of the Canadian training mission in Ukraine and extension of its full activities after COVID-19 pandemic.

Talking about enhancement of the readiness of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Andrii Taran emphasized continuation of the course towards consistent defence reform in Ukraine. For his part, Harjit Sajjan welcomed the continued reform of the Ukrainian defence agency in accordance with NATO standards, as well as assured support for Ukraine’s accession toNATO Enhanced Opportunity Program and the unlocking of the NATO-Ukraine Commission.

Minister of Defence of Ukraine stressed the priority of continuation of the Euro-Atlantic integration policy in the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, and also informed the Canadian counterpart about the key goals and priorities of the Ukrainian Defence Ministry.

Minister of National Defence of Canada stressed that the Canadian side is ready to use the Canadian Embassy in Ukraine as a contact point to promote these issues among allies.

During the telephone conversation, the parties also discussed a number of topics regarding the continuation of Canada’s advisory assistance to Ukraine and the intensification of military -technical cooperation.

Ministers of Defence of Ukraine and Canada expressed their interest in arranging a bilateral meeting in the near future.
