The Minister of Defence of Ukraine Andrii Taran held a meeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Lithuania to Ukraine Marius Janukonis, who is completing a diplomatic mission in Ukraine.

The parties discussed the state and prospects of Ukrainian-Lithuanian defence cooperation. The Minister of Defence stressed that it is extremely important for Ukraine to continue implementing the reform process, and noted the partners’ contribution to development of the country’s defence capabilities.

Andrii Taran once again focused his attention on the continuity of the course towards Euro-Atlantic integration. He noted that this is perhaps the only way to strengthen the country’s defence capability, as well as to counter Russian armed aggression.

In this context, the head of the defence agency noted the importance of continuing the planned international cooperation activities with numerous partner states, as well as multinational exercises after improving the epidemiological situation and completing restrictive measures to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Ukrainian side noted the work of advisers and instructors from the Republic of Lithuania, their contribution to the reform of the Armed Forces and the development of capabilities of the state defence forces.

The Minister also stressed the importance of planned bilateral cooperation events to be implemented in the future, as well as joint initiatives such as the Declaration on Cyber Security Cooperation.

As a result of the meeting, the parties reaffirmed their intentions to develop cooperation in such areas as C2 reform, development of NCO Corp, territorial and cyber defence.

Andrii Taran expressed words of gratitude to Marius Janukonis and emphasized his personal contribution to the development of relations between Ukraine and the Republic of Lithuania. The Minister awarded the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Lithuania to Ukraine with the distinction of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine — a medal “For Assistance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine”.
