On April 12, 2019, a traditional medal parade took place in the city of Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo. During the ceremony, MONUSCO Force Commander Brazilian Lt. Gen. Elias Rodrigues Martins Filho decorated personnel of 18 Separate Helicopter Detachment with UN medals for service in a name of peace. In his speech, the Commander stressed that Ukrainians always fulfilled their tasks under all circumstances and thanked our military personnel for their professionalism and commitment to the values of the United Nations. In turn, the commander of the detachment, Colonel Vitalii Tsapko, presented to the Commander the “War. No Comment” photobook, which. It tells better than any words that Ukraine is compelled to defend world peace and order not only under the aegis of the UN today, but also on its own territory, defending itself from Russian aggression.

Unfortunately, the event did not have a traditional festive atmosphere due to the tragic death of Ukrainian officer, who served as a military observer in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The officer of the General Staff Main Directorate for Military Cooperation and Peacekeeping Operations, Colonel Yurii Politko, served in the city of Kitshanga, DR Congo. On April 8, 2019, he arrived to the city of Goma and was urgently taken to a third-level hospital because of a complaint about sickness. The results of blood tests taken in the hospital showed a high level of malarial plasmodium contents, the officer was diagnosed with “malaria” desease. Doctors immediately assigned medications and emergency treatment was provided. Taking into account the general condition and in order to ensure the necessary treatment of the officer, the command of the third level hospital of MONUSCO decided to transfer officer to the 4th level hospital in Kampala, Uganda. The transport of the serviceman to the city of Entebbe (Uganda) was carried out on April 9, 2019, with the assistance of two medical representatives. From there he was taken to a hospital in the city of Kampala by road.

At 8.00, on April 11, 2019, a letter from the Mission medical support base in Entebe was received by the headquarters of MONUSCO. It informed that Colonel Yurii Politko died on April 11, 2019 in a hospital of the city of Kampala due to the severe form of the disease.

This is a tragedy not only for the family, but for the whole of Ukraine, which lost its true son. The servicemen of the Ukrainian national contingent in DR Congo express their sincere condolences to the relatives and close ones of the Ukrainian officer because of irreparable loss and continue to fulfill their duty in all circumstances.
