Welcome to the Press Center of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. Here is the weekly update of the situation in the operations area of the Joint Forces from 20th to 26th May 2019.
During the last week, the Russian Occupation forces continued to destabilize situation in the operation area of the JFO. The enemy used weapons which are prohibited by the Minsk agreements. Besides 82mm and 120mm mortars and 122 mm artillery systems, the Russian Occupation forces used small arms, grenade launchers, heavy machine guns, anti-tank missiles and other infantry weapons.
Over the past week, from 20th to 26th May 2019, Ukrainian defenders’ positions fell under provocative fire by the Russian Occupation forces for 57 times. Thus:
On May 20th, the enemy has fired 34 82mm mines against the JFO positions.
What is more, on May 22nd, the Russian Occupation forces shelled the JFO positions near Zolote-4 village firing more than 30 82mm and 120 mm mines and a few 122 mm artillery shells.
On May 23rd, more than 13 82mm and 120mm mines were fired by the enemy.
One more time, on May 24th, the Russian Occupation forces has fired 25 120mm and 82mm mines.
The situation in the operation area is under full control of the Joint Forces.
Our servicemen opened fire in response to suppress enemy activity using infantry weapons and by strictly adhering to the Minsk agreements.
As the result of the Russian armed aggression, 7 of our servicemen were WIA.
We want to inform with grief that during last week, 1 serviceman was KIA. We express our sincerest condolences to families and loved ones of our deceased defender.
And now to the information from the Defense Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
According to the directives from the Kremlin the Russian Occupation administration has started a massive propaganda campaign among local population to further disseminate information to increase the number of people who has obtained citizenship of the Russian Federation. They also urge local population to convince their relatives on the government controlled territories to do the same.
Moreover, the Russian Occupation authorities have increased the intensity of the dissemination of false and distorted messages by local media with allegations of the JFO in the violation of the ceasefire and shelling of civilian infrastructure. In this way, Russian propagandists are trying to convince the local population to intensify hostilities on the part of the Ukrainian side. At the same time, propaganda film groups, one of them is Russian television channel NTV, are involved in the preparation of provocative materials for misleading the population.
As for other news
Ministry of Defense of Ukraine welcomes the order of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) which prescribed provisional measures ordering The Russian Federation to immediately release the Ukrainian naval vessels Berdyansk, Nikopol and Yani Kapu and return them to the custody of Ukraine and immediately release the 24 detained Ukrainian servicemen and allow them to return to Ukraine. As the Tribunal stated, the actions taken by the Russian Federation create a real and ongoing risk of irreparable prejudice to the rights claimed by Ukraine to the immunity of its naval vessels and the servicemen on board. Ministry of Defense now expect Russia to comply promptly and in full with the Tribunal’s order.
On May 23rd, the stage of testing of Vilkha M and Vilkha R missile systems took place in the Odessa region. The Minister of Defense said that the tests were successful, and the state tests are to take place from August to October to further adopt these types of systems in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Minister of Defense of Ukraine has also noted that Vilkha M and Vilkha R are an effective weapon systems, which today is very much needed for Ukraine.
On May 23, the official ceremony of presenting the newly appointed Chief of the General Staff of Ukraine — Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to the leadership of the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces of Ukraine was held at the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. The Minister of Defense of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak announced the decree of the President of Ukraine regarding the authority of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as the appointment of Lieutenant General Ruslan Khomchak as Chief of the General Staff — Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The Minister of Defense of Ukraine congratulated Lieutenant-General Ruslan Khomchak on the appointment to a very responsible and serious position, wished success and victory, and also identified the relevant tasks. The Minister of Defense of Ukraine has also expressed his gratitude to the former Chief of General Staff General of Ukraine Viktor Muzhenko.
